INTRODUCTION
The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 is a landmark policy introduced by the Government of India to transform the Indian education system and make it more holistic, flexible, inclusive, and learner-centred. It focuses on the overall development of students by promoting critical thinking, creativity, communication skills, vocational education, and the use of technology in learning. NEP 2020 also emphasizes education in the mother tongue or regional language at the foundational stages and encourages multidisciplinary learning.
Thus, NEP 2020 places teachers at the heart of educational transformation, recognizing that empowered, skilled, and motivated teachers are essential for achieving the vision of quality and equitable education in India.
The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 aims to bring significant changes to the Indian education system by making education more inclusive, flexible, skill-oriented, and focused on the holistic development of learners. It emphasizes not only academic knowledge but also creativity, critical thinking, communication, problem-solving, values, and practical skills. In this transformation, the teacher has a very important role as a facilitator, mentor, guide, and role model. Teachers are expected to create a supportive and engaging classroom environment, use innovative and experiential teaching methods, integrate technology into learning, and encourage students to become independent and lifelong learners. They also need to understand individual differences and provide learning opportunities according to the needs and abilities of students. NEP 2020 further emphasizes continuous professional development of teachers so that they can update their knowledge, skills, and teaching practices. Therefore, teachers are key agents in implementing the vision of NEP 2020 and in developing responsible, creative, skilled, and confident citizens who can contribute positively to society and the nation.
MEANING AND CONCEPT
The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 is a comprehensive policy introduced by the Government of India with the aim of transforming the education system and making it more holistic, flexible, inclusive, and learner-centred. The meaning of NEP 2020 can be understood as a new approach to education that focuses on the overall development of learners rather than only academic achievement. Its concept is based on providing quality education, developing critical thinking and creativity, promoting experiential and skill-based learning, encouraging the use of technology, and ensuring equal learning opportunities for all students. Within this concept, the role of the teacher is highly significant. A teacher is not limited to delivering information but acts as a facilitator, mentor, guide, and role model. Teachers are expected to understand the individual needs of learners, encourage active participation, use innovative teaching methods, integrate technology, develop students’ skills and values, and create an inclusive classroom environment. NEP 2020 also emphasizes continuous professional development of teachers so that they can improve their knowledge and teaching practices. Thus, the concept of NEP 2020 recognizes the teacher as a key agent of educational change who helps learners achieve their intellectual, social, emotional, moral, and practical development.
WHY THE TOPIC MATTERS TODAY?
The topic of NEP 2020 and the role of teachers is highly relevant today because the education system is changing rapidly due to technology, globalization, changing career opportunities, and diverse learning needs. Students require more than textbook knowledge; they need critical thinking, creativity, communication, problem-solving, digital skills, and the ability to learn continuously. NEP 2020 addresses these changing requirements by promoting holistic, skill-based, experiential, and learner-centred education. Teachers are especially important in making these changes meaningful in the classroom because they guide students, use innovative teaching methods, integrate technology, and support different learning abilities. The policy also highlights the importance of continuous professional development for teachers so that they can adapt to new educational approaches. Therefore, understanding NEP 2020 and the changing role of teachers is important for improving the quality of education and preparing students to face the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century.
