.. Introduction

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming an important part of modern education. AI-powered tools can help teachers prepare learning materials, generate activities, provide personalised support and analyse learning needs. Students can also use AI for brainstorming, explanation, language support, research and practice.

However, the use of AI in education also raises important ethical questions. How should student data be protected? How can teachers ensure that AI-generated information is accurate? How can AI be used without reducing students' creativity and independent thinking?

UNESCO's Guidance for Generative AI in Education and Research emphasises a human-centred approach in which AI should support learners and teachers while protecting human agency, inclusion, equity, privacy and cultural diversity.

Therefore, ethical AI use means using artificial intelligence as a supportive educational tool rather than allowing it to replace human judgement, creativity and relationships.

What is Artificial Intelligence in Education?

Artificial Intelligence in Education (AIED) refers to the use of AI technologies to support teaching, learning and educational administration.

Examples include:

AI-based tutoring systems

Adaptive learning platforms

AI chatbots

Automated feedback tools

Speech and language applications

Educational recommendation systems

Generative AI tools for creating text, images and learning resources

AI can assist teachers and students, but its educational value depends greatly on how responsibly it is used.

Why is Ethical Use of AI Important?

AI systems can process large amounts of information, but they may also produce inaccurate or biased responses. UNESCO highlights concerns including privacy, equity, inclusion, bias, cultural and linguistic diversity, and the need for appropriate regulation and teacher preparation.

Ethical use of AI is important because it helps to:

  • Protect student privacy.

  • Promote fairness and equality.

  • Prevent misuse of technology.

  • Maintain academic integrity.

  • Encourage independent thinking.

  • Ensure accuracy and reliability.

  • Keep teachers involved in important decisions.

  • Provide equal opportunities for learners.

Principles of Ethical AI in Education

1. Privacy and Data Protection

Student information such as names, photographs, academic records, personal details and learning data should be handled carefully.

Teachers and institutions should avoid entering unnecessary personal or confidential information into AI tools. UNESCO specifically identifies data privacy protection as an important requirement for responsible use of generative AI in education.

Example:
Instead of entering a student's complete personal profile into an AI tool, a teacher can use anonymous information such as "Grade 2 student who needs additional practice in multiplication."

2. Fairness and Inclusion

AI should be accessible and useful to students from different backgrounds and abilities.

Schools should consider whether students have equal access to devices, internet connectivity and digital learning resources. AI should not increase the gap between students who have access to technology and those who do not.

3. Transparency

Teachers and students should understand when and why AI is being used.

For example, if a student uses AI to brainstorm ideas for an assignment, the student should follow the school's requirements for acknowledging that assistance.

Students should also understand that AI-generated answers are not automatically correct.

4. Accuracy and Verification

AI can sometimes generate incorrect information, invented references or misleading answers.

Therefore:

AI-generated information should be checked before it is accepted or shared.

Teachers can encourage students to compare AI responses with:

textbooks
trusted educational websites
research papers
official sources
classroom resources

This develops students' critical thinking and digital literacy.

5. Academic Honesty

AI should not become a way of avoiding learning.

There is an important difference between:

Ethical use:
"Explain photosynthesis to me in simple language so that I can understand it."

and

Unethical use:
"Write my entire assignment so I can submit it as my own work."

The first supports learning, while the second can undermine academic integrity and independent learning.

6. Human Oversight

AI should assist teachers rather than replace their professional judgement.

Teachers understand their students' emotional, social and educational needs in ways that an AI system cannot fully understand.

A human-centred approach is also emphasised by UNESCO, which states that AI should genuinely benefit and empower teachers and learners.

Ethical Uses of AI by Teachers

Teachers can use AI responsibly for:

Educational Purpose Example of Ethical Use
Lesson planning Generate possible activities for a mathematics lesson.
Differentiated learning Create easier or more challenging practice questions.
Worksheets Generate question ideas and practice exercises.
Brainstorming Develop examples, stories and classroom activities.
Language learning Create vocabulary and grammar exercises.
Feedback Suggest areas where student work could be improved.
Teaching resources Develop discussion questions and quizzes.
Creativity Generate ideas for projects and classroom activities.

❗Important: Teachers should review and adapt AI-generated content before using it with students.

Ethical Uses of AI by Students

Students can use AI as a learning assistant.

Appropriate uses include:
Asking for explanations of difficult concepts
Generating practice questions
Getting examples of mathematical problems
Brainstorming ideas
Improving grammar
Translating or simplifying text
Creating revision questions
Asking for different ways to understand a topic
Receiving feedback on a draft
Students should avoid:
Copying AI-generated answers without understanding them
Submitting AI-generated assignments as entirely their own work
Using AI to cheat in examinations
Sharing private information with AI tools
Believing every AI response without verification.

AI: Helpful Assistant, Not a Replacement for the Teacher

A useful way to understand ethical AI is:

Teacher + Student + AI

rather than:

AI → Teacher → Student

The teacher remains responsible for understanding learners, selecting appropriate resources, evaluating information and making educational decisions.

AI can provide speed, ideas and personalised support, while teachers provide empathy, judgement, encouragement and human connection.

A Simple Ethical AI Checklist for Teachers

Before using an AI tool, a teacher can ask:

✅ Is this tool appropriate for my learning objective?
✅ Am I protecting students' personal information?
✅ Is the information accurate?
✅ Have I checked the AI-generated content?
✅ Does the activity encourage students to think independently?
✅ Is the tool accessible and fair to all students?
✅ Have I clearly explained how AI should be used?
✅ Am I maintaining human oversight?

The Role of the Teacher         in the Age of AI

The teacher's role is not becoming less important because of AI. Instead, teachers increasingly need to become guides, facilitators and critical evaluators of technology.

Teachers can help students develop:

AI literacy
Critical thinking
Digital citizenship
Information-verification skills
Creativity
Academic integrity
Responsible technology habits

The World Economic Forum's guidance on responsible AI use in education similarly highlights principles such as purpose, AI literacy, compliance and balancing benefits with risks.

Conclusion

Artificial Intelligence has the potential to transform education by supporting personalised learning, helping teachers create resources and giving students new ways to explore knowledge. At the same time, its use brings responsibilities related to privacy, fairness, transparency, accuracy, academic integrity and human control.

Ethical AI in education is therefore not about simply asking whether AI should be used. It is about asking:

"How can we use AI in a way that strengthens learning while protecting human values?"

The future of education should combine the capabilities of technology with the creativity, empathy, judgement and human connection of teachers and learners.

“Use AI to support learning,

not to replace learning.”
